Some photos from the Barlow Room at Timberline Lodge. Douglas Lynch created the artwork on the walls of this room as part of a WPA project in 1937-38. The piece is called “A Calendar of Sports” and it is intended to represent the different ways the woods, streams and mountainside landscapes could be enjoyed by people of the time.
The artwork was created by incising lines into large sheets of linoleum with a matte knife and a flat chisel. The linoleum was later glazed with color and sized with white shellac. The Barlow Room used to be the lodge’s Ski Grill, and although the ravages of cleaning supplies used to remove errant grease and condiments from the walls of the room over the years took a toll on the glowing color of the original, the artwork is still wonderful. I love the small touches in each panel that show Douglas’ playful side, especially the small woodland creatures that hide in the background.
